LDYC’s CLUB SERIES

SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

1)         RULES

Races will be governed by the 2001-2004 ISAF Racing Rules for Sailing (RRS), SAS, NSA and NKA prescriptions thereto, the rules of the classes concerned, the Notice of the Race, except as any of these are changed by these Sailing Instructions. 

2)         NOTICES TO COMPETITORS

Notices to competitors will be posted on the Official Notice Board located in the foyer of Lake Deney’s Yacht Club, and /or on the Bridge Boat Notice Board. Attention to alterations made to the sailing instructions displayed either on the official Notice Board or the Bridge Boat Notice Board, will be by the raising the “L” flag accompanied by one sound signal. 

3)            STARTING TIMES:

3.1              Races will start at 10h00 on Sunday’s unless otherwise specified on the official notice boards.

3.2              No race will be started after 13h00 on Sunday’s unless otherwise specified on the official notice boards. 

4)            CLASS FLAGS

Class flags will be: Turquoise Pennant for Mass Start All Classes, unless otherwise stated on the Bridge Boats Notice Board 5 minutes prior to the first warning signal.  

5)         COURSES as per course flag flown on the Bridge Boat Mast prior to Warning Signal. Laps and Marks to be rounded may be displayed on the Bridge Boats Notice Board.

5.1              Windward/Leeward Course: “W” Flag

5.2             Olympic Course: “O” Flag

5.3             Trapezoid Course “T” Flag

5.4             Medium Distance Race “K” Flag 

The marks of the above courses will be Yellow buoys, and or fixed marks in the case of medium distance race being sailed. 

A Port Course is to be sailed if a RED flag is flown, or a Starboard Course if a GREEN flag is flown from the Bridge Boat prior to the Warning Signal. 

SHORTENING COURSE: The course maybe shortened in terms of (RRS) 32, in which case yachts are to finish between a “mark of the course” and a boat flying the “S” flag and a blue bucket.

Should the Bridge Boat remain on station approximately half way up the “beat” as may be opted for by the Bridge Officer for courses 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3, then a shortened course signalled from this position will require yachts to finish after rounding the last mark rounded by the leading boat, to finish between the mast of the Bridge Boat displaying a “S” Flag and Blue Flag/Shape and the White Limit Mark. 

6)         STARTS

6.1              Races will start using rule 26 of the RRS Part 3. Classes will be started at 6 minutes intervals.

6.2              Starting area will be located on the area of water between LDYC and the Castle.

6.3              The starting line will be between the masts of the Bridge Boat and the Limit Mark.

6.4               A boat shall not start later than 5 minutes after her class’s starting signal.

6.5               The Bridge and Limit Mark are “marks of the course” only when starting. 

7)         THE FINISH

7.1        The finish line will be between the masts of the Bridge and the Limit Mark

7.3        Bridge Boat and Limit Mark are “marks of the course” only when finishing a race. 

8)          PENALTY SYSTEM

ISAF Rule 44 shall apply except that RRS 44.3 shall NOT apply, and in the case of Catamarans and Micro Multihulls the penalty shall be one complete 360-degree turn. 

9)         TIME LIMIT

9.1        Races may be abandoned at the discretion of the Race Officer.

9.2        Any yacht not finishing within 1.75 times the leading yacht’s elapsed time for courses 5.1; 5.2 and 5.3, or 1.6 times for Medium Distance races will be deemed not to have finished.  

10)        PROTESTS

10.1      Protests shall be written on forms available at the Race Office and delivered within 60 minutes after the last race of the day, to the Race Office.

10.2      All protests may be heard at the LDYC Clubhouse on the day of the particular race, or at any other venue at a later date, but will be at the earliest opportunity to ensure that all parties affected are given reasonable time to be present. These arrangements are entirely at the discretion of the LDYC Sailing Committee.

10.3      Protests will be heard in approximately the order of receipt. 

11)       SCORING

        For overall results, yachts will be handicapped according to the Low Points scoring system of Appendix A 4.1 and A9 of RRS using the NKA rating system. Results will be posted on LDYC’s Notice Board after each race and on the LDYC web page www.ldyc.co.za  

12)       LIABILITY

Competitors shall sail entirely at their own risk. None of the organisations or persons concerned in the running of any race accepts any liability for damage or injury suffered during or in connection with the races, or at any other time. 

13)       BRIDGE DUTIES

Average points, after discards over an entire series, will be awarded to the bridge officer with a maximum of one race day (amount of races for that day) per series. (Only point 13 or 14 can apply)

14)       AWAY REGATTAS

Average points, after discards over an entire series, will be awarded to boats that are sailing in away regattas if it is their national or provincial championships. Only for race days that is in direct conflict with LDYC race days. Average for the first race day will be allowed. Qualifying boats must notify LDYC Rear Commodore beforehand of their intentions. (Only point 13 or 14 can apply)

15)       CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

Club champion points will be awarded in the order of LDYC skipper entries finishing in a series. A skipper is not allowed to change boats within a series. If boats are changed within a series, only the boat  that started the series will be scored. A different boat may be used for a different series. The total lowest score of the combined winter, spring and summer series will determine the winner. There will be no discards or average points, except in the case of items 13 and 14 of the sailing instructions. A skipper that does not sail in a series will be scored - LDYC entries + 1.

16)       SCRUTINEERING

Scrutineering will be at the bridge officer’s discression.

Course diagrams for Courses 5.2; 5.2 and 5.3 are available from the LDYC Regatta Office, or may be displayed on the Bridge Boats Notice Board prior to the start of any race.
